Markos Vamvakaris
1905-1972

Hailed as the Patriach of Rembetiko music, Vamvakaris had his share of hard life.
As a child he was already getting in trouble with the police and found himself working as a shoe-polisher in Pyreus.
Eventually he found ease and comfort with the Bozuki and started writing and performing its own songs.
His musical style was straight forward and simple without any complex arrangements and other shenanigans .
Nevertheless he could convey a whole world of feelings and sentiments through a simple text and a few notes.
For doing just that he gained the respect of his fellow musicians and an immense popularity in Greece.
