Portela is one the most famous Samba schools in Rio De Janeiro. Along the years a group of musicians who were playing in the rehearsals came together and become known as the Velha Guarda de Portela.

Marisa Monte, was a young and rising star of the MPB scene. As a long time fan of the Portela scholl she had a dream to get these musicians, most of them were not professional, into a recording studio and document their raw work.

In 2002, her dream became a reality and she managed to produce a master piece that includes some of the most beautiful pieces of Samba music.
